English Portfolio 2009

Introduction (continued)

As for the revisions of my papers, the visual narrative essay was the one I did the most revision on. I read the teacher's comments on how I should fix my movie and paper, and followed her suggestions directly. This was the best way to make a revision in a paper just due to peer editing and the opinions of another individual. Specifically, I took away some awkward phrases, and unnecessary words. But the big revision I made was adding a conclusion to my visual narrative paper which I had forgotten to do so in the beginning. The revision I made for the movie was adding another slide which included how music had related to communication, and altering the font and colors to make it more legible to the viewer. These revisions had improved my essays/movie significantly and had not affected them negatively in any way.

For the Culture, Society, and Me writing, the only revisions I had made were changing the background of the liner notes from a blue to a gray. The reason I did this was purely of rhetorical decision. The grayish color seemed to coincide better with the multitude of colors of the CD cover. The simple gray was used as a neutral color to balance out the many mixtures of colors included in the cover front and back.

The revisions I made on Making Meaning were strictly recommendations from my teacher, Mrs. Williams. I made some adjustments in regarding the advertisement as "marketing" AIDS, when it was actually trying to market the awareness of it. I also switched around a paragraph or two so it would make the essay sound more fluid. Primarily, the last paragraph in the workshop draft was incorporated within the main body of the paper so it wouldn't seem tacked on. In a sense, the revisions I did for this particular writing I found to be the most difficult. But after it was completed, the essay was much improved from when it was originally submitted.

The final essay for revisions was also quite a simple one. The main revisions I did for this was that I added quotes from the actual articles onto my paper to support my argument further. Other than that, the only other revision I made was on the actual review portion. I switched around the pictures so it would make the overall page seem more balanced, and added some more opinions towards the end of the review.

Through all of the revisions in my writing, I was able to learn that a good title always makes for a better paper. Simply labeling an essay as "Essay #1" did not cut it in this class, and through these writings, I was able to learn that concept. These revisions have made me a better writer overall, and is easy to say that there was nothing to be lost from doing them. It has greatly improved my skills as a writer, and through this semesters I was able to learn that with every paper, there is always something that can be done to make it better. I learned that the only way to become a better reader is to read consistently. Through our constant reading assignments, I began to pick up the material at a faster pace, in turn, making me a better reader and preparing me for next semester. As for future writing assignments, the biggest area in which I could still improve is backing up my arguments and main ideas with quotes, excerpts from articles, and other ways to make the body of my paper much better.
